The city detects 3,556 local cases on Wednesday
Ho Chi Minh City logged more than 3,500 domestic coronavirus cases on Wednesday, when over 5,300 infections were found in the community across Vietnam.
The city reported 3,556 locally-infected patients, which is the second-biggest daily case increase this month, according to the Ministry of Health’s data.
It detected a record high of 4,692 infections on July 18.
The southern Vietnamese economic hub has documented 41,343 since the nation was hit by the fourth and worst virus wave on April 27.
The health ministry confirmed 36 coronavirus-related deaths on Wednesday, including 32 in Ho Chi Minh City, two in Long An Province, and two in Dong Thap Province.
The agency reported 5,357 local cases in 35 provinces and cities the same day, 1,081 of which were found in the community while the rest were in centralized quarantine centers or isolated areas.
Binh Duong Province, an industrial park hub just outside Ho Chi Minh City, accounted for 964 of the infections. Dong Nai Province, a nearby industrial park base, registered 170 cases.
Vietnam has documented 64,508 domestically-acquired infections in 60 out of its 63 provinces and cities in this wave.
Ho Chi Minh City is taking the lead, followed by Bac Giang Province with 5,733 patients, Binh Duong Province with 4,689, Bac Ninh Province with 1,702, and Dong Thap Province with 1,548, and Dong Nai Province with 1,315.
By comparison, Vietnam confirmed 106 community cases in the first wave from January 23 to April 16, 2020, 554 in the second from July 25 to December 1, 2020, and 910 in the third from January 28 to March 25, 2021.
The health ministry announced 528 recoveries on Wednesday, bringing the total to 11,971 recovered patients. The death toll has risen to 370.
The nation has overall recorded 66,078 domestic and 2,099 imported cases since the COVID-19 pandemic first hit it on January 23, 2020.
Over 4.3 million vaccine shots have been administered to medical workers, teachers, factory workers, journalists, and other frontline staff since Vietnam rolled out inoculation on March 8.
About 317,000 people have been fully vaccinated.
Vietnam has received about 10.6 million coronavirus vaccine doses from direct purchase, the COVAX scheme, and donations as yet.
It expects to obtain 175 million shots of various vaccines, including 51 million Pfizer-BioNTech jabs, by early 2022.
The Vietnamese government set a target of immunizing two-thirds of a population of nearly 98 million people against COVID-19 by the first quarter of next year.
