Over 1,700 were recorded in Ho Chi Minh City
The Ministry of Health confirmed almost 2,400 coronavirus cases in Vietnam on Monday, beating the record of almost 2,000 patients set one day before.
The ministry logged 2,383 cases, including 16 imported infections registered in Binh Dinh Province, Tay Ninh Province, Vinh Long Province, An Giang Province, Hai Phong Province, and Hoa Binh Province.
Twenty-seven provinces and cities recorded 2,367 locally-infected patients, including 1,764 in Ho Chi Minh City, 128 in Binh Duong Province, 118 in Tien Giang Province, and 82 in Dong Nai Province.
The health ministry said 2,096 of the domestic transmissions were found in centralized quarantine centers or section-off areas.
The latest cases broke the record of 1,953 patients set on Sunday.
Vietnam has been grappling with a new outbreak since April 27 after more than a year of success in containing the virus.
The Ministry of Health has reported 28,689 local infections in 58 out of 63 provinces and cities ever since.
Ho Chi Minh City is on top with 14,776 cases, followed by Bac Giang Province with 5,721 patients, Bac Ninh Province with 1,667, Binh Duong Province with 1,628, and Dong Thap Province with 618.
By comparison, Vietnam confirmed 106 community cases in the first wave from January 23 to April 16, 2020, 554 in the second from July 25 to December 1, 2020, and 910 in the third from January 28 to March 25, 2021.
The Southeast Asian nation has recorded an accumulation of 32,199 infections, including since the pathogen first hit it early last year, according to the health ministry’s data.
Recoveries have increased to 9,331, including 56 announced on Monday, whereas today’s seven deaths have taken the toll to 123.
The country has administered 4,051,585 vaccine doses to medical workers, teachers, factory workers, and other frontline staff since it rolled out inoculation on March 8.
A total of 277,447 people have been fully vaccinated.
The government set a target of immunizing two-thirds of a population of nearly 98 million people against COVID-19 by the first quarter of next year.
