Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on Thursday approved a project to channel VND3.4 trillion (US$147 million) into building infrastructure at the Lien Chieu Port in the central city of Da Nang.
The People’s Committee of Da Nang is assigned as the project’s management unit.
In the first phase, the project is expected to be capable of handling five million cargos a year and easing cargo loads on the Tien Sa and Son Tra ports, thus helping reduce road traffic through the inner part of Da Nang.
The main works in the project will include breakwater embankments, breakwaters, ship passages, and technical infrastructures to accommodate general cargo ships and bulk carriers of up to 100,000 metric tons, and container vessels with a capacity of 6,000-8,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent unit).
The project’s total investment will be around VND3.4 trillion, with over VND2.99 trillion ($129.3 million) coming from the state coffer between 2021 and 2025 and the remaining from Da Nang’s budget.
The implementation of the Lien Chieu port is scheduled to start this year and complete by 2025.
Prime Minister Phuc assigned the municipal People’s Committee to preside over the elaboration of the project’s feasibility and submit it to competent agencies for the issuance of investment decision in accordance with Vietnamese law.
In addition, the coastal city’s authorities have to carry out the environmental impact assessment for the project and make the local budget ready in case of delays in the state budget allocation, and proactively coordinate with ministries and agencies to organize and ensure the construction progress as scheduled.
