The Ministry of Health reported 12,591 local coronavirus infections in Vietnam on Tuesday, together with over 10,000 recoveries.

The latest local cases were logged in 42 provinces and cities whereas the country also recorded 16 imported infections on the same day, the health ministry said.

The ministry had documented 14,219 locally-infected patients on Monday.

It detected 7,231 of the new cases in the community, with the remainder found in isolated areas or centralized quarantine facilities.

Ho Chi Minh City registered 5,444 domestic infections, down by 445 cases; Binh Duong Province 4,530, down by 1,520; Dong Nai Province 634; Long An Province 587; Tien Giang Province 214; Dong Thap Province 138; Da Nang 123; and Hanoi 77.

Vietnam has confirmed 457,882 community transmissions in 62 out of its 63 provinces and cities since the fourth – and worst – virus wave emerged in the country on April 27.

Ho Chi Minh City is hit the hardest with 221,254 patients, followed by Binh Duong Province with 114,788, Dong Nai Province with 23,766, Long An Province with 22,044, Tien Giang Province with 9,652, Dong Thap Province with 6,965, Khanh Hoa Province with 6,500, Da Nang with 4,299, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province with 3,470, and Hanoi with 3,513.

By comparison, Vietnam confirmed a combined 1,570 locally-acquired infections in the previous three waves.

The health ministry announced 10,044 recoveries on Tuesday, bringing the total to 238,860.

The toll remains at 11,064 fatalities because the ministry did not report any death on the same day.

Vietnam has recorded 462,096 patients since the COVID-19 pandemic first struck it early last year.

The Southeast Asian country has received nearly 27.5 million vaccine shots to date, giving almost 20 million doses since vaccination was rolled out on March 8.

Around 2.6 million people have been fully vaccinated.

Health authorities aim to immunize at least two-thirds of a population of nearly 98 million people against COVID-19 by the first quarter of next year.
