The city needs 13.8 million doses to vaccinate 99 percent of citizens age 18 and older
More than three million doses of COVID-19 vaccine had been allocated to Ho Chi Minh City so far, while five million more are expected to be distributed to the metropolis this month.
The southern city had received 3,096,770 vaccine shots as of Saturday, of which 1,309,728 had been administered, according to the Ho Chi Minh City Center for Disease Control (HCDC).
An additional five million jabs are expected to be distributed to the city in August.
Ho Chi Minh City currently has 6,966,626 residents age 18 and older, the HCDC stated, adding that it needs approximately 13.8 million vaccine shots to vaccinate 99 percent of these citizens.
The city entered the 11th day of its fifth inoculation campaign on Sunday.
During this campaign, 930,000 COVID-19 vaccine shots are set to be administered to local residents within 14 to 21 days.
The municipal steering committee for COVID-19 prevention and control has requested the local health sector to increase the number of vaccination teams from 641 to 1,000 to speed up the progress.
Vietnam had documented 150,060 COVID-19 cases as of Sunday morning, with 38,734 recoveries and 1,306 deaths, according to the Ministry of Health.
The country has recorded 146,249 local infections in 62 out of 63 provinces and cities since the fourth wave began on April 27.
Ho Chi Minh City is the largest epicenter with 92,270 cases.
More than 6.2 million vaccine shots have been administered in the country since inoculation began on March 8, with 620,611 people fully vaccinated.
