A new solar energy plant in Hau Giang Province, Vietnam, which required an investment of VND700 billion (US$30.5 million), was inaugurated on Monday.

The Hau Giang Solar Power Plant was built on a 33-hectare plot in Hoa An Commune, Phung Hiep District.

With a design capacity of 35 megawatt-peak, the power plant is expected to produce 50,800 megawatt-hours of electricity and reap VND80 billion ($3.5 million) in revenue per year.

The facility was built by a consortium led by Halcom Vietnam JSC and SE Corporation from Japan.

Nguyen Quang Huan, chairman of Halcom Vietnam JSC, described the project as the first step in a long-term and sustainable-leaning investment plan of Hau Giang Province.

Halcom Vietnam has received endorsement from Hau Giang authorities for the construction of another solar power plant with a projected capacity of 40 megawatt-peak in the area.

The implementation of the coming project will reap certain benefits from the preexisting infrastructure in the locale, Huan added.

Nguyen Van Hoa, deputy chairman of the Hau Giang People’s Committee, stated that the namesake solar power plant is the province’s first-of-its-kind, which is expected to utilize the ample potential of sunlight radiation in the region.

Electricity from the plant will be connected to the 110kV transmission line that stretches from Hau Giang’s Vi Thanh City to Long My Commune.

As noted in the Renewables 2020 Global Status report (REN21), Vietnam ranked 5th in the world in terms of solar energy in 2019.

The shift to renewable energy, especially solar power, in Vietnam is considered among the best in the world, thanks to the new Feed-in Tariff price incentive policy of the government.
